The four numbers that decide your month

You'll come away knowing how to look at four numbers and what to do with each one the following Monday, pulled from what you're already tracking.

6 lessons26 min readAnalytics

You close out the month and know whether you sold more or less than last time, but not why. Was it because more customers came in, because each one spent more, or because your regulars came back? Without knowing the cause, next month you fix the wrong thing: you cut prices when the real problem was nobody coming back, or you spend on ads when the real problem was what each sale left you.

This course sets four numbers (what came in, what each sale leaves on average, how many customers come back, and how much it costs to bring in a new one) and the order you check them each month. Each one gets its own lesson, showing you how to pull it from what you're already tracking, and ends with a concrete decision for the following Monday. The last one brings them all together into a single ten-minute routine when you close out the month.

Who it's for

This is for someone who already has sales and wants to know why the month went up or down, not for someone who hasn't sold anything yet and has no numbers to look at.

What you'll walk away with
  • Choose which month to compare yours to, based on whether your business is seasonal or not
  • Calculate what each sale leaves you on average, and tell whether you need more customers or each sale just isn't leaving you enough
  • Count how many of this month's customers already knew you from before
  • Set a spending limit per new customer for each channel, and know when it stops paying off
Before you start

Have at least one closed month of sales so you can calculate based on real data, not guesses.

If you don't know whether this month went well, it's not a gut feeling, it's four numbers

You set the four numbers you'll check each month to know whether things went well and why, instead of judging it by feel.

How much came in this month, and which month you compare it to, to know if it's good

You'll know which month to compare yours to each time, depending on whether your business is seasonal or not, and you'll be able to say with confidence whether this month was better or worse.

What each sale leaves you on average, and what to do if it's not much

By the end, you'll know whether you need more customers or each sale isn't leaving you enough, and what to fix first.

Do your customers come back, or do you have to bring in new people every month?

  5. 5

What each new customer costs you, and when it stops paying off

The Monday after checking your four numbers: what to fix and what to leave alone
